Mall Rats

This weekend I feel like we spent most of our time in malls. Three days and four malls...yep, I'd say we were mall rats this weekend. But we did get outfits for the Groom and Groomsmen.

We ended up agreeing on some really nice linen blend pants from Macy's, white shirts, and a tie. I was a little worried about getting anything linen due to wrinkling, but I think the blend will work out great. I do have to say one thing, we were both pleasantly surprised with how accommodating the sales associates were at Macy's. Not only did they help us out with some coupons, but they even were hunting down pants for us from other stores around the country. I'm so glad to check another thing off our list.

I'm off from work til Wednesday, which I am very much looking forward towards. Tomorrow night we are going to see Coldplay, and I couldn't be more excited. This will be my 4th time seeing them and they have never disappointed me.

Here is what my fitness routine for the week is looking like. Week 2 of half marathon training!
  • Monday: Strength and Stretch. I also have a meeting with a personal trainer in the morning.
  • Tuesday: 3 mile run
  • Wednesday: 2 mile easy run on treadmill or elliptical + arms
  • Thursday: 3 mile run
  • Friday: 30 minute cross/strength
  • Saturday: 4 mile run
  • Sunday: rest
Hope you had a great weekend!

A Suitable Morning

Well last night I didn't get dinner as quickly as I thought I would. But we did knock off some shopping for the Fiance and groomsmen. However, finding the important the pants and a vest for the proving to be a lot harder than we thought.

Since we are having a beach wedding, we want to have the look be a little more casual. The Fiance is pretty adamant about wearing the same tie as his groomsmen so I really want him to wear a vest to be a little more distinguished as the groom.

The groomsmen would wear a tie with a white shirt and some khakis or tan slacks. The ties are going to be an aqua/turquoise pattern.

 Source: Lindy Stroda via Pinterest

Here lies the tricky part. We need to find a three piece suit for the Fiance, but just the pants for the rest of the guys. Our original thought was to go to Men's Warehouse and find a suit there, which we did, but it seems silly to make the guys pay for a three piece suit when they are only going to need to buy the pants. We found some suite separates at Macy's, but unfortunately the sizes are extremely limited. Guess we should have started shopping earlier! Who knew 6+ months wasn't going to be enough time! So, we have some more searching to do and options to look into.

The good news...we did get some white shirts and ties for the guys to wear at a great price! Macy's was having a sale and being a card holder, I was able to use some extra coupons. Can't beat that!

Unfortunately we did not get to watch much of the opening ceremonies last night. But I did DVR them! By the time we finished shopping it was close to 9:30pm and we were starving! We headed to the Cheesecake Factory for a late dinner where we both ordered off of the Skinnylicious menu. It was just what we needed. By the time we got home, we both crawled into bed just in time to see the US teams walk out. Hoping to catch the rest of the ceremonies at some point this weekend!

This morning I got up, made some toast with peanut butter and banana to eat while I got ready for my first 4 mile run! I was a little nervous when I stepped outside and felt how muggy it was out. But I felt pretty good once I started running and felt even better when I finished.

Guess I do run faster without Peanut! I didn't know how each of my miles were going to shape up because around mile 1.5, I started to feel some cramping. I think I can attribute this to not drinking enough water/fluids last night and this morning. So I made a note that I need to do a better job at hydrating the night and morning before my runs.

Either way, I am pretty happy with my mile times! I am also looking forward to see how I improve over the next 11 weeks. Week 1 of Half Marathon training down!

When I got home I immediately grabbed a Zico Coconut Water out of the fridge to drink as I stretched. This is by far my favorite brand of Coconut Water out there (the chocolate flavor is to die fo). And no, they did not pay me to say that. That is my honest opinion.

I knew I needed something else to get me through the morning so after that I whipped up a smoothie which included protein powder and a Starbucks instant ice coffee packet.

It doesn't look all that pretty, but it tastes like a frozen drink you can get from Starbucks! Plus, I am getting my caffeine from the coffee and my protein. I love multitasking. Recipe to come :)

Off to shower and get ready for the day! Going to see a baby, see if we can snag a couple more ties, and go out to dinner for my birthday :D .

Have a great Saturday!

Olympic Friday!

OK, so my Friday hasn't exactly been "Olympic"... but the 2012 Olympic Games start tonight! I'm pretty excited.

I am hoping to catch as much as the Olympic action as I can, including tonight's ceremony. I am also looking forward to the Woman's Gymnastics and both Men and Woman's swim teams! What team are you most looking forward to watching?

Last night when I set our alarm, I had every intention to get up and go to the gym. But then when I woke up, it was cloudy and rainy and I couldn't get myself out of bed (geeze, between yesterday and today's posts, you guys probably think I am the laziest person!). Since today was a cross training day, I decided that a 30 minute walk with Peanut would do. So after a couple more snoozes I got up, laced up, and headed out the door. Something I didn't consider was that it was muggy and raining. But Peanut and I plugged through...who am I kidding, Peanut could care less what it's doing outside!

Frolicking in grass on our walk

After our walk, I made a Protein Pancake and a nice cup of coffee. Apparently it was exactly what I needed to get going in my day because I was out the door within the hour! Keep in mind, I didn't do any styling to my hair (again) today, but for some reason I always seem to get out the door faster on Fridays, no matter what I need to do to get ready for work. Does that happen to anyone else? Maybe I'm just extra excited for the weekend :).
My stomach started growling around 10:30, so I opted for a handful of mixed nuts. When noon rolled around, I was ready to eat! I heated up some leftovers from last night's dinner that was quite delicious. It looked like this - only in a Tupperware container and all mixed up:

Around 3pm I broke into one of my "standard" snacks of Greek yogurt, blueberries and chia seeds. And now, as the clock creeps around 5pm, all I can think of is what we'll have for dinner.
And on that note, I'm off! The Fiance and I are going to get some groomsmen shopping done (I hope) and hopefully grab some dinner! Tomorrow is my long run, only 4 miles this week!
Happy Olympic Friday! Hope you get to enjoy the opening ceremonies!

Thursday Training Update

Day 3 and 4 of Half Marathon training...check!

It was a little hard to get out of bed this morning. Last night we went to the Liverpool vs. AS Roma match at Fenway park with our friends and we didn't get home until shortly before midnight. I also had one three more beers than I had wanted to knowing that I had a run planned for this morning and I also ate some food before climbing into bed. No bueno.

Before I get into today's workout, let me recap yesterday.

Wednesday: Day 3
I like my Wednesday training plan. I can wake up and decide if I feel like running outside, hitting the gym, or taking a class. I decided to head to the gym for 30 minutes on the eliptical and some upper body workouts. I really like this Bicep, Tricep and Shoulder workout supperset workout from Courtney over at Sweet Tooth Sweet Life. Not only is it quick, but my arms feel like jello by the end! Gotta get working on those wedding arms ;)!

I followed up my workout with some time on the foam roller. My legs were definitely sore from Tuesday's run and the foam roller hurts so good. I am on the hunt to buy a foam roller for the apartment! Foam rolling while watching Real Housewives ... sounds fun to me :).

So this morning, when our alarm went off shortly before 6AM, I definitely hit snooze a couple extra many times. I also contemplated putting off my run until this afternoon, but I knew that if I didn't do it in the morning, I wasn't going to have the energy to do it this afternoon. So, I decided on 5 more minutes of sleep and during those 5 minutes, I also made the executive decision that the hair was not going to get styled today. I finally rolled out of bed around 6:30AM and quickly made a sandwich thin with some PB and banana, which I ate as I slowly got dressed and laced up the shoes. Oh, and I also chugged some water. Since I knew I wasn't going to have much time after my run for a walk with Miss Peanut, I also decided to take her with me. Two birds, one stone. Done.

A couple minutes shy of 7AM we headed out the door! I felt pretty sluggish but finally I got in my groove and felt pretty good. Since Peanut's mission is a little different than mine (sniffing, bathroom breaks, and playing with the leash) I don't typically run for time when I run with her. I just shoot for the mileage.

We ended up finishing 3 miles in 29:46 minutes. Not bad considering all of Peanut's bathroom breaks and a slow start! I'm not really going for time on my first Half Marathon, I just want to be able to finish strong.

I quickly got in the shower when I got home and got ready fairly quick. I save so much time when I don't have to do my hair. Before heading out the door I made myself a Green-A-Colada smoothie. I knew I wasn't going to make it through the morning without more fuel. I barely made it to lunch! Note to self, fuel better post run. Needless to say, it was an early lunch for me. I only brought a plum with me, so I headed down to the cafe where I had a turkey sandwich on toasted whole wheat bread, some hummus, lettuce, tomato and cucumber. It hit the spot. My stomach started growling around 3PM so I broke out my snack. Vanilla Greek yogurt from Trader Joe's with fresh blueberries and chia seeds.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to start dinner as soon as I got home cause the chicken hadn't defrosted yet. So as I am sitting here typing up this blog post, I am snacking on some green pepper and pickling cucumbers that we picked up at the farmer's stand on Sunday.

This also happens to be the only food picture I took of the day. Still a rookie here, bear with me!

Ok, off to finish up my snack and wait for the chicken to defrost. Then I am planting my butt on the couch! We've been crazy busy lately so I am looking forward to unwind before starting my Friday.

Couple things I want to do tonight:

  • Plan my workout for tomorrow: 30 minutes cross + strength training
    • I found this article today and I am going to try to include some of the strength moves into my workouts.
    • Wedding inspiration! We've taken a break from doing much in the last couple weeks and it's time to get back in the game! A little over 6 months to go
    • Another article I want to read up on
    • Buy some clothes from! I bought a Groupon a month or so ago for $25 and got a $50 credit. Time to buy some new running clothes!

Hope you have a good Thursday night!

Let the Training Begin

Today was my second day of my half marathon training, and it was also a day off for me. My cousin has been visiting from out of town and today was his last day in town and took it off so I could show him a couple last things around the city and take him to the airport. I was even able to squeeze in a quick trip to Trader Joe's and Target after I dropped him off. Somehow I also managed to only spend $20... that NEVER happens.

Let's rewind.

Yesterday was day 1 of my half marathon training. Monday's are hard to get going as is, so I was happy that my plan allowed me to stick with one of my favorite classes after work that includes 30 minutes of strength training. After class, I foam rolled for 10-15 minutes before heading home.

My parents were coming into town to take my cousin out to dinner at our favorite restaurant in the area, Sunset Grill. If you are from the Boston area and love beer (and good food), you have to check this place out. They have over 112 beers on tap and countless ones in bottles. You won't be disappointed, I promise.

I didn't take any pictures (oops, sorry!) but the family and I got some stuffed quahogs to share as an appetizer. They were delicious! So moist and a ton of flavor. For dinner I ordered a special they were running which included two soft shell tacos with fresh seared tuna, mango salsa, and some other delicious dressing. There were two delicious sides it came with too. I paired my meal with the recommended brew, St. Arnold Weedwacker beer, which was also delicious.

I got to bed a little later than I wanted to last night, so it was hard to wake up this morning. But I had 3 miles to run! I finally pulled myself out of bed, fed Peanut, and made myself 1/2 of a sandwich thin with peanut butter and 1/2 a banana.

I headed out the door and 29 minutes later, I ran 3 miles!

Despite the muggy weather, I felt really good! I think the pre-run fuel really helped me get going this morning. I usually only eat half of a banana or drink a coconut water before hitting the gym, but after reading a blog post written by Gina over at the Fitnessista yesterday. Her post came at the perfect time for me!

After my run I showered and got ready for another touristy day! Before heading out the door I made a Green-a-colada smoothie to fuel up.

I can not get enough of these smoothies!

We headed over to Fenway to attend their tour. We bought our tickets and had some time to kill so we grabbed a sausage with onions and peppers on Yawkey Way. The tour started shortly after and last for about an hour and 15 minutes. I highly recommend the Fenway tour if you have never been. It's so interesting and they take you to all the parts of the park with the best views.

Then we headed over to the Harpoon Brewery for a tasting. Yum.

Overall it was a really great weekend. We had a lot of fun showing my cousin around town and doing some of the touristy stuff. It's actually interesting to do them now that I am a little older and appreciate things a bit more.

Once I got home, I made a pesto, mozzarella and tomato pizza on Trader Joe's bread with a side salad mixed with veggies from a farm stand we stopped at on our way home from the beach on Sunday. It was good!

I'm off to relax a bit before bed! Hope your Monday and Tuesday was good!

The Puppy Love Workout

Not sure if anyone else has this same problem, but when I try to do an at home circuit workout or even just some pushups and planks after a run, Peanut always thinks I want to play.

It makes it very difficult to do a pushup (or any workout move in the house) when your dog is laying on her back under your face thinking you are going to play with her. This is why I usually head to the gym. Good motivation, right?!

I was reading around on the world wide web this morning and saw this workout from Shape Magazine and wanted to share.

7 Moves You Can Do With Your Pet

Looks like the dog would be pretty entertained. The only way this would work for Peanut is if the toy was food. Even then, I think she would still be in my face or jumping all over me to try and get the treat.

Do you have difficulties doing at home workouts because of your dog?

Have a wonderful Saturday!

Training for My First Half Marathon

Hey guys! Sorry I have been MIA this past week... it's been pretty busy over here! Including making my training plan for my first Half Marathon(eeek)!

One of the reasons why I wanted to start this blog was to document my journey to getting/staying fit and healthy for my wedding day. I rekindled my love for the gym and working out shortly after we got engaged. I vowed to myself that I wouldn't crash diet or do anything extreme in preparation for our wedding day. The last thing I need to do is become bridezilla be stressed out and crabby because I am not fueling properly and taking care of myself.

At first I was a little nervous with getting bored with the gym and frustrated with not seeing results. I have to say, with a little over six months to go, I do not feel this way. I've been trying out new workouts every week and I love how it's keeping me interested in getting up every morning for the gym! But anyways, running a Half Marathon and the Boston Marathon are on my bucket list. I'm not mentally ready to train for a full marathon yet, but I felt ready to try a half. Plus, I thought I was going to be ready for a change in my workout routine and itching to try something new. When one of our friends told me she was going to sign up for the Newport Half Marathon I couldn't resist. So a couple months ago I signed up too.

I wanted to create a training plan to hold myself accountable (plus, I like having things planned out). There are so free many resources out there (here, here, and here) not to mention all the bloggers who also blog about their personal training plans (here and here). I really liked Hal Hidgon's Novice 1 Training Program, but knew I wouldn't be able to commit to a long run on Sunday. So I made a couple of changes based on my current routine.

So here is what I came up with:
  • Mondays: Strength & Stretching
  • Tuesdays: Starting with a 3 mile run and working up to a 5 mile run as I get closer to the race
  • Wednesdays: 2-3 mile run, cross training or strength training. I plan to use a coupon I have for a Real Ryde spin class or yoga.
  • Thursdays: Starting with a 3 mile run and working up to a 5 mile run as I get closer to the race
  • Fridays: Cross and arm workouts
  • Saturday: Long run
  • Sunday: Rest
Couple of notes:
  • I plan to use my Monday strength days to continue with one of my favorite exercise classes. It's a class focused mostly on core work, but also does some work for the booty and arms. I probably won't work my legs as hard as I have been in this class and definitely be sure to do some foam rolling after.
  • Use my Wednesdays as my "free day" to do whatever I am in the mood to do. If I want to run again, I will. If I want to go to spin or maybe even Yoga, I will. Or maybe I'll just go to the gym and lift some weights. I am hoping having this random "free day" will keep me from getting bored.
  • Friday's will also be a day where I take it as an easier day and do some cross training.
  • I still need to find my 5 and 10K races for two long run Saturdays.
If something isn't working out, I am ok with making a change. As long as I stick to the mileage, I am confident that I will be ready for the race! Oh yeah, I also think this means I need to bite the bullet and buy a foam roller.

Training starts Monday... stay tuned to see how it's going :)

What I Ate Food & Fitness Wednesday

I've seen What I Ate Wednesday around decided I wanted to join in on the fun. I thought it might be interesting to show you what I eat throughout the day. For the past two months or so, I've been going to the gym in the morning and then eating every 2-3 hours throughout the day to make sure I don't do a face plant and fall asleep on my keyboard.

Here we go!

First, fitness! I got up at the sleepy hour of 5:45am and went to the gym. There was a new morning class added that I wanted to try... 30 minutes of Tabata! What's Tabata? Well it was actually my first time doing it, but I had seen it over on the Fitenissta in the Summer Shape Up Series. The Tabata days didn't fit into my routine, so I didn't end up doing them. Anyways, Tabata is a form of high intesitivy interval training. Any exercise can be incorporated into the training, but it follows this basic format:
  • 4 minutes long
  • 20 seconds of intense training (pushups, burpees, jumping jacks, squats, etc.)
  • 10 seconds of rest
  • Total of 8 rounds
We ended up doing a bunch of rounds. Two different 4 minute ones, Two 2 minute ones, and a couple more 1 minute ones. We had two minute rests between each round. It was not easy, but it felt great after. It's also a good sign when the whole class was telling the instructor how much they liked it.

I also did some shoulder work outs before the class started. 7 month wedding countdown!

Speaking of wedding countdown, I also got my wedding shoes in tonight! And I can't contain my excitement.

Anyways, time for the food!

Breakfast: Coffee & Protein Pancakes with fresh berries

Do you like my coffee mug? My parents used to take these out when guests visited. When the fiance and I moved in together, they passed them down to us. Now they are my favorite mugs to give guests when they stay with us. I love their reactions :).

Morning Snack: Honey Greek Yogurt & Fresh Berries

Lunch: A Quinoa and Grilled Veggie Salad I forgot to take a picture of & Watermelon

Afternoon Snack: Apple & String Cheese

Dinner: Chicken Sausage Italian Stir Fry

I love this dish, it's so quick and easy! I cut up 1 onion and 1 pepper (I had yellow on hand) and placed it in the pan with some EVOO. Once softened I added in the broccoli and covered the pan with a lid. I stirred it a couple times in-between washing some dishes. Once the broccoli was cooked I added in some chopped Chicken Sausage from Trader Joe's. Then I stirred in a can of Fire Roasted Diced Tomatoes & Green Chili's until it was warmed through and started to boil. I let it simmer for a couple minutes. I typically serve it with some roasted sweet potatoes (and regular for the man), but tonight I put it over some brown rice and sprinkled some Parm Cheese on top. Delish!

Dessert: Consisted of a couple pieces of Mamba Fruit Chews. Have you ever had these? They taste like Starburst, so good.

So that covers my first WIAW! Hope you enjoyed it!

Weekend Wrap Up: Without a Plan

Another weekend has come and gone in the blink of an eye. I can't believe Friday is going to be mid-JULY. Crazy.

Going into the weekend, I had no plans. The only thing I wanted to do was go to the beach but we didn't have any specific place in mind. The weekend ended up being really fun and full of lots of friends, beers, time outside, and I even managed to squeeze in a run!

I woke up Saturday morning to a snoring fiance. Peanut and I got out of bed pretty easily, but someone else was a little groggy from the Red Sox game the night before. I put on some workout clothes to take Peanut for a walk. After waking up a little, I decided I was in the mood for a run. It was HOT, but we did about 2.50 miles and it tired Peanut out. This is always a good thing when we aren't going to be around for the day.

 {Proof! Little slower considering the bathroom breaks for the pup.}

Soon after I got a quick shower and packed up some stuff for the beach, clouds rolled in. We checked the weather and it said it was sunny on the South Shore, so we decided to go anyways.

We knew we wanted some Marylou's iced coffees before the beach so that was going to be the deciding point.

Sadly, right after we pulled out of the drive through it started sprinkling. There was no sun or blue skies in sight. But we were determined not to let it ruin our day, so we decided to keep driving to the Cape! It ended up working out good cause a friend of ours has a house down there and the fiance's brother was also in town with his sister-in-law. So we planned a little meet up.

But first, lunch.

{Lobster Quesidilla's from The Black Cat Tavern}

Then play.

Luckily the sun did peek out a couple times! Either way, we were outside sitting in some white adirondak chairs and enjoying some Cape Cod beers. It was a fun day. But a not so fun morning. Also, how gorgeous are Hydrangea bushes? They are everywhere in the Cape, and I love it.

At some point today we got up enough energy to take Peanut to a dog park near by where she can swim and frolic. We also got in a nice (hot) walk, which felt good.

We stopped at Trader Joe's on the way home where I picked up some stuff for the week and for dinner. The fiance was craving Mac N' Cheese. I was not craving all the cooking to make the homemade kind. So I picked up a box of Trader Joe's Organic Mac N' Cheese. I was pleasantly surprised to see that I could pronounce every ingredient, and there was only four of them. Win. I mixed it up with a grilled chicken sausage and leftover roasted broccoli florets I had in the fridge for some protein and greens.

{Pretty Tasty}

Dessert consisted of my new favorite Ice Cream - Trader Joe's strawberry non-dairy frozen yogurt made with coconut milk.

Alright, off to finish up some internet reading before officially heading to bed. I have plans to read more of The Fault in Our Stars before I shut my eyes tonight. The book is really good so far!

Hope you had a great weekend!

Fourth of July Favorites

Happy 4th of July!

The weather is a little iffy here (shocking for New England). Originally I had planned a morning run and a beach day with friends, but it doesn't look like it's going to be the best beach day. I also cancelled my running plans because my hamstrings are a little sore from all the lunges I did in workout 2 of Gina's Summer Shape Up! I need to buy that foam roller for the house soon! So I'm going to let this be my recovery day. We'll probably take Peanut on a long walk later.

Before we head out and start our day. I thought it would be fun to share a couple of my favorite 4th of July things:

1) Online Sales! Nothing like a little retail therapy on a rainy morning. Check out these sales:
Gap - Up to 40% Off. I really want these pink legging jeans!
J.Crew Factory - Free Shipping and up to 50% Off! (I'm picking up some shorts I've been wanting for $25!)

Weekend Wrap-Up: Pre 4th of July

Happy July 1st! Can you believe it's already July?! I can't. I also can't believe we'll be getting married in 7 months!

This weekend was another busy one! Friday the fiance and I decided to stay in. We picked up some fish at a local Whole Foods and baked them with some steamed green beans and baked potatoes (sweet for me). It was a delicious and relaxing way to kick off our weekend.

Saturday I got up bright and went on a long walk with the fiance and Peanut. Soon after, I got ready and hit the road for my parent's house. My Mom and I had plans to go shopping for her Mother of the Bride dress. Soon after I got there we headed out to breakfast. I got a veggie omelet with a side of whole wheat toast and some home fries. I ate almost all the omelet, toast, and had a couple home fries. After breakfast we headed out for our appointment at a bridal boutique. We had really good luck, and the first dress she tried on we fell in love with! She continued to play dress up for me and tried on the dress on more time to make the final decision and decide on the color.

She also had fun walking around in these shoes, which I love! But it doesn't go so well with our beach wedding. Hot! I can't wait for her dress to come in!

After we found her dress we went over to a family-friend's house for a Grad party where we ate, enjoyed a couple beers, and floated in their heated in-ground swimming pool. It was a nice relaxing end to the day :)

I got up at 6:35am this morning to head back to Boston and meet the fiance. We had beach plans!s We packed up our cooler with some fruit salad I made, sandwiches, snacks, waters and a couple beers  and hit the road for the South Shore. We were meeting my future brother-in-law and his wife, as well as two other friends of ours, at Duxbury Beach.

It was a beautiful beach day and it wasn't too croweded. The water was cold, but we were so hot we waded in to cool off. Luckily the tide was going out, so it was easier to hang out in the water.

After the beach we grabbed some food and beers at The Deck on Green Harbor. Right when we got there a lightening storm started to roll in, so we opted to sit inside, which was still nice with big windows overlooking the harbor. The girls and I got their lobster rolls which were reasonably priced and surprisingly big!

And of course delicious. The hand cut fries and coleslaw were also good, but I focused on finishing the important thing on my plate :)

We got back to Boston at a reasonable time and got our grocery shopping out of the way. Before sitting on the couch for the rest of the night, I made myself a sweet treat.

Trader Joe's strawberry non-dairy frozen yogurt made with coconut milk topped with fruit salad and some slivered almonds.

You have to try this stuff. It's creamy and delicious with a slight hint of coconut. I think I might be obsessed.

Off to relax and read before starting the week off. I'm a little excited for a mid-week break!

How was your weekend?
